Proverbs 14:13 observes, "Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief."
But in Christ, the opposite becomes true.
Only Jesus can make it possible for grief to end in joy. Only the One who conquered death himself can make this promise to us: a promise to fix it. A promise to make this misery better. A promise to make the pain go away. A promise that our present grief will turn into future joy.
No more will happiness become ruined by loss. No more will delight become stained by sin. No more will life be cut off by the consequence of the curse. He'll fix it. He has fixed it. Grief must obey him and evolve into unspeakable joy for the believer save by grace through faith in him.
Apart from Christ, joy can only ever end in grief. Deep down, we all know this. We all know we're marching toward an end that no amount of medicine or science or human wisdom can thwart. But the good news of Christ's resurrection guarantees our grief will end in joy. In Christ, mourning has no other choice but to end in jubilee. This is our hope. This is our tomorrow.
