Lament in Counseling Care

Helping counselees move from roars of rage to cries of faith
on youtube
How do we walk with people through suffering without minimizing their pain or misrepresenting God?
Biblical lament gives us a way to care for hurting people with honesty, faith, and Christ-centered hope.
In this session, you’ll learn how biblical lament transforms “roars of rage” into cries of faith, why it serves as a grace in suffering, and how to help counselees take refuge in God through a practical, Scripture-shaped framework.
Key Takeaways
• Biblical lament transforms "roars of rage" into cries of faith.
• Lament enables honest worship in the midst of real sorrow.
• Lament is a grace from God that teaches us how to suffer faithfully.
• The goal of lament is refuge in God, not control of outcomes.
• Lament deepens dependence on God rather than disillusionment in God.
• The EVAC framework provides a practical pathway for counseling care.
A Practical Framework for Lament: EVAC
Biblical lament isn’t just something to understand—it’s something to practice. Psalm 13 gives us a clear pattern for helping others learn how to bring their pain to God.
EVAC: A pathway for “evacuating” to God in distress
Engage God
Direct your words to Him. Lament is Godward, not just emotional release.
Voice Complaint
Honestly express sorrow, confusion, and even the felt absence of God.
Ask for Help
Appeal to God’s character and promises with specific requests.
Choose to Trust
Commit to trust God’s Word, even when feelings don’t align.
This framework helps counselees move from internalizing or exploding in pain to bowing before the Lord in trembling trust.
Understanding Biblical Lament in Counseling Care
Counselees often swing between two extremes in suffering: bottling up their pain or blowing up in frustration. But Scripture offers a better way.

Biblical lament gives voice to real grief while anchoring the heart in truth. It teaches us how to bring our anxiety, vexation, and sorrow before the Lord with emotional honesty, spiritual sincerity, and biblical integrity.

Lament is not about controlling God—it’s about coming to him. It is a grace that reminds us:

• We don’t have to pretend we’re okay.
• We are not expected to suffer silently or perfectly.
• We are invited to take refuge in a God who hears us.

And ultimately, lament leads us to desire God himself—not just relief from our circumstances.
Helping Counselees Take Refuge in God
Everyone seeks refuge in suffering. The question is: where? Biblical counseling helps people discern the difference between:

• Safe refuge → turning toward God in honest dependence (Ps. 16:1).
• Dangerous refuge → seeking control, comfort, or relief apart from Christ (Jonah 2:8).

Lament becomes a tool to gently expose misplaced hopes, surface heart-level struggles, and redirect the soul toward Christ as a true and present refuge (Ps. 46:1).
What Comes After Lament?
Lament doesn’t always resolve circumstances—but it does reorient the heart. After crying out to God, counselees can learn to:

• Wait patiently — shifting from wrestling with God to resting in Him (Ps. 37:7, Ps. 40:1, Ps. 55:22).
• Work diligently — continuing in faithful obedience (1 Pt. 4:19, Phil. 2:4, 13, Eph. 2:10, Gal. 5:14).
• Watch expectantly — trusting that God will act in His time (Ps. 59:9-10, Gal. 6:9, Heb. 6:10)

This helps them live faithfully in the tension between what is felt and what is true. You can read more about moving forward in post-lament moments in my article, "What Do We Do After Lament?".
