Hurting people are forced to walk through experiences they'd rather not have.
Forced to walk through grief. Forced to walk into unexpected medical appointments. Forced to walk through the fall-out of a broken relationship. Forced to walk through horrific traumas. Forced to walk through helpless situations. Forced to walk through incredible suffering. Forced to walk through the echoes of loneliness.
I'm not sure how often we stop to think about all the walking the wounded must do in life, but compassion volunteers: "I will walk with you."
Look around and you will see someone walking a road they didn't choose for themselves. Tears they never thought they'd cry. Sights they never thought they'd see. Hope they never thought they'd lose. Pain they never thought they'd bear.
Compassion doesn't always have answers—it can't make the past hurt less or offer guarantees about the future. But it can say, "I will walk with you." Simple, yet meaningful. Gentle, yet powerful. Invitational, yet humble.
Compassion means that no one should be walking alone.
